The confusion that this statement causes in your head is very common in Brazil and here in the United States. What happens is that DC refers to the Washington District of Columbia, not the state of Washington (WA), whose capital is Olympia and the main city is the iconic Seattle, nor to any of the 241 towns, villages and communities that receive the same name throughout the country.
To differentiate when one is talking about the capital or one of its homonyms is easy. Here in the United States, we often refer to it as DC, while the state or other cities with the same name are known just as Washington. Remember: When asked what location you most want to meet in the US, answer “DC.”
